Pat Healy had quite the run during his time with Strikeforce, and although he never got his chance to fight for the promotion’s lightweight belt, he says fighting Jim Miller tomorrow at UFC 159 means just as much.
Healy didn’t end up facing Gilbert Melendez because the former champ was injured leading up to Strikeforce’s demise. As a result of winning six straight fights with the promotion, Healy was tapped for not one, but two title fights.
While seeing those opportunities vanish was frustrating, Healy knows that fighting Miller tomorrow night, on the main card of a huge PPV event nonetheless, is a pretty big deal. The Team Quest fighter told MMA Junkie.com Radio recently:
“It’s hard to get down. There were some trying times last year with the frustration of those fights falling through, but I’m definitely well past all that, and getting Jim Miller on the main card on of a UFC event feels pretty much as good as a title fight in Strikeforce.”
Miller is no slouch, of course, and Healy is the underdog heading in, which would make a victory that much bigger. Winner aside, the bout has all the markings of a gritty, grueling, and yet, entertaining war.
