Weeks before the decision was made for Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones to become The Ultimate Fighter season 17 coaches there was a completely different match-up in mind for the job. Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis were called upon to host as the latest U.S. coaches, but unlucky for them the UFC was forced to call in Jones vs. Sonnen as replacements as Pettis dealt with a lingering injury. Pettis and Cerrone are set for a collision courseĀ  in January 2013 with a lightweight title shot still on the line. These two have a sordid pass with multiple chances to face each other, but somehow their paths have yet to cross till now.

Both hail from the now defunct WEC promotion. While Donald fought for the title on three separate occasions, one being an interim, Anthony was actually the last holder of the belt. Sharing opponents in Jeremy Stephens, Danny Castillo, and Benson Henderson they have never had the chance to test each other. Both fighters have been calling for the fight as of late, but a shoulder injury to Pettis has kept him out of the cage for the majority of 2012.

While these two will still meet in the cage sometime in January 2103 it will not come with a coaching job. what do you think fans? Would you have been more excited to see the lightweights coach, or is the prospect for multiple weeks of Chael antagonizing Jones enough to make it worth it?
