Just days prior to the UFC’s second appearance on broadcast television, UFC president Dana White has announced the likely next lightweight top contenders bout, Nate Diaz (15-7 MMA, 9-5 UFC) vs. Jim Miller (21-3 MMA, 12-2 UFC) for UFC on Fox 3. The event is scheduled to take place May 5 from the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J.
New Jersey’s own Jim Miller has been on a tear in the UFC lightweight division, defeating 9 of his last 10 opponents, including a recent first round finish of the heavy handed Melvin Guillard at UFC on FX this past weekend. If not for his loss to Ben Henderson via decision, Miller would likely be next in line for the title shot against Frankie Edgar in the upcoming Saitama, Japan event.
The younger Diaz brother Nate has been making waves of his own. Breaking the compustrike striking record against kickboxing specialist, Donald Cerrone, and walking right through Japanese star, Takanori Gomi as of recent. 4-2 in his last six fights, while racking up five “Fight of the Night” bonuses is more than enough to justify Diaz as a top contender by UFC standards.
The event is likely to cross paths with boxing once again, as Floyd Mayweather Jr. is expecting to take a fight against Miguel Cotto or Saul Alvarez on that date. A long-anticipated ‘super-fight’ against Manny Pacquaio has also been in talks for the date, but has looked unlikely, as both camps have not been able to come to terms on bout agreements.
