It looks like Nam Phan will face a tough test after dropping down to bantamweight, as according to multiple reports, the former TUF competitor will fight Takeya Mizugaki on December 7th at UFC FN 33. If you’ve followed Mizugaki to date, and caught his split decision win over the rising Erik Perez last month, you know the vet is one tough customer.
Of course, Phan (18-11) has been involved in his fair share of memorable wars as well, and has defeated Cole Miller and Leonard Garcia in the Octagon. Most recently, the 30 year-old dropped a unanimous decision loss to Dennis Siver at UFC on FOX 5 in December.
Phan is likely in a must win situation, as the well rounded fighter has gone 2-4 thus far in the UFC. Mizugaki (18-7-2) scored wins over Jeff Houghland and Bryan Caraway before facing Perez at UFC FN 27. The only man to defeat the 29 year-old Japanese fighter in his last five outings is Chris Cariaso.
So, while it might not have been a match-up many people saw coming, Mizugaki-Phan certainly has the ingredients to be a pretty sweet fight.
UFC FN 33 will take place in Brisbane, Australia and will feature Mark Hunt taking on “Bigfoot” Silva in the main event. In the co-main-event, former light-heavyweight champ “Shogun” Rua will battle James Te Huna. Stay tuned to Caged Insider.com for all your UFC news and coverage.
