If violent crime in the audience is the sign of a good, entertaining UFC event, then UFC 169 – which took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on Saturday night – was certainly a good event. Besides one very distracting brawl that took place in the stands while the fights were underway in the cage, there were two stabbings. Yes, stabbings.
CagedInsider was on hand and confirmed with security that the stabbings, which were only rumors by the time the postfight presser had finished, did indeed occur. NJ.com got the official word though from the police.
Two people were stabbed inside the Prudential Center during an Ultimate Fighting Championship event on Saturday night, police said.
The victims, who were not identified, suffered non-life threatening injuries after they were stabbed in the stands, according to Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio.
A suspect was arrested in the attack, according to DeMaio, who did not identify the assailant or say when or where the incident took place. An e-mail to an arena spokesman seeking comment was not immediately returned.
Off the top of my head, the only other MMA event to see an audience member stabbed was Pentagon Combat, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on September 27, 1997. In that event, Renzo Gracie was cut through the cage with a knife while in the midst of a heated battle with Eugenio Tadeau. The resulting riot had MMA banned in that city for years.
