This weekend’s UFC on FX 8 main event between Luke Rockhold and Vitor Belfort seems to have a decent amount of hype behind it, not only because each man is a ridiculously talented fighter, but because of the lead up to it. Much of this lead up, however, has focused on the recent revelation that Belfort utilizes testosterone-replacement-therapy, which happens to be one of the more polarizing issues in the sport right now.
Of course, there is no shortage of fighters and MMA insiders who have come out against TRT (including Rockhold), and Kenny Florian recently told MMA Junkie.com Radio that he’s not a fan. According to Florian, aging fighters who use TRT have “a huge advantage”, since it helps them recover more quickly. Florian also relayed that if you’re body can’t produce enough testosterone, “perhaps it’s time to retire.” The UFC would lose several big name fighters if that becomes the norm.
Now as far as the UFC on FX 8 headliner though, or any bout for that matter, Florian still believes that skill and ability trumps TRT.
“We have fighters who are on TRT, but it really does come down to the technical level of the fighters. We have two very experienced and dangerous guys going at it with Luke Rockhold and Vitor Belfort. I think that’s a great fight no matter what.”
Regardless of where you come in on TRT, this Saturday’s tilt does have all the makings of an entertaining fight, with plenty of ranking and title shot implications tied in.
