While the January Strikeforce has lost some championship power, it has now gained a former street brawler in Jorge Masvidal. Due to the absences of Gilbert Melendez from the card has left his opponent Pat Healy in need of an opponent. Masvidal’s money issues have been well documented, since multiple fights have been cancelled due to cards being cancelled this year. Hopefully, if exciting fights like this continue to be added to the January card, then we will still see the organization go out with a bang. The last Strikeforce card is still featuring one title fight between champion Nate Marquardt and challenger Tarec Saffiedine. The card takes place on January 12th in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Jorge Masvidal has already challenged for the title, but he was unable to beat the current champion. Beyond that Masvidal has been flawless in the organization winning his four other bouts. There is another layer of intrigue in this bout as Masvidal beat Healy’s brother all the way back in 2008 at a Strikeforce event. Now he can have a complete set of wins over the Healy brothers if he is victorious in this fight.
Healy has waited a long time to finally fight for the title, and now it looks like he will never get the chance. While boasting a mediocre of 28-16 in his overall career his career at lightweight has been much better with a record of 7-1 with six of those wins in Strikeforce. His only loss has come at the hands of former champion Josh Thomson. While the title is not up for grabs in this fight, the winner will most likely get a shot at the top of the lightweight division when they enter the UFC.
