The MMA world is still buzzing about last night’s instant classic between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165, which as you likely know, nearly saw the end of “Bones'” historic reign as light-heavyweight champ. It was one of those bouts that no one will forget where they were when they watched it (assuming said people were reasonably sober of course). Jones ended up setting a new title defense record of six with a unanimous decision win.

Gustafsson lived up to his promotional hype and then some throughout the tilt, by not only bloodying Jones with strikes, but by squashing 10 of the champion’s 11 takedowns (according to Fight Metric). Not only that, but “The Mauler” actually took Jones down. Not many people, if any, were predicting that.  The fight was so memorable and so competitive, naturally, Dana White was immediately asked about the possibility of Jones-Gustafsson II afterwards (quote via MMA

“We’ve got to see how these guys feel, (and) if anything is wrong with them, and then go from there.”

“I didn’t say we were going to do the rematch,” he said. “I would like to do the rematch. It makes sense, I like it. First of all, with a fight like this, you’ve got to go home and let things play out. Jon Jones isn’t going to even want to hear the word fight for two, three weeks. I guarantee you that. Maybe it is Glover, maybe it’s a rematch. I don’t know.

And as far as Gustafsson? The rising star relayed afterwards that “I want a rematch right away. But it’s up to the UFC. It’s an honor to fight Jon.”

Of course, Glover Teixeira is waiting in the wings as well, but by judging the fan reaction online, it certainly looks like Jones-Gustafsson II would be huge. If the two fighters are up for it, then Teixeira may have to scrap one more time before getting a shot at championship gold.
