Sure Jon Jones is set to throw down with Alexander Gustafsson tomorrow at UFC 165, in what some people believe could be the champ’s toughest test yet, but has that stopped talk about a “Bones”-Daniel Cormier fight? Of course not.
Now part of the reason the buzz behind the fight continues, is due to recent comments from Dana White, who said Cormier could jump the line if he beats Roy Nelson at UFC 166. There’s also the fact that the two talented fighters have been firing verbal jabs at each other for several months. So, while Jones understandably fielded questions about Gustafsson at a pre-fight presser in Toronto, he was also asked about the prospect of fighting Cormier. It seems clear that Jones doesn’t intend to come calling on Cormier even if he takes out Nelson on October 19th. “Bones” noted at the presser (comments via MMA Junkie.com):
“As far as Daniel Cormier, he definitely won’t be getting a title fight,” said Jones, who on Saturday meets Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. “I don’t think I would accept a fight against him. He’s a guy I don’t respect at all. I’d definitely make sure he loses the weight, makes 205 and make sure he earns a title shot.”
“At the end of the day, the guy’s a hater. I’ve really done nothing wrong to the guy to have an issue with him, and every time I turn around he’s figuring out a way to have my name in his mouth.”
Jones also reportedly added that he believes a fight with Glover Teixeira (who was told he’d fight the winner of Jones-Gustafsson a few days ago) or an “interesting” super fight could be next. Both of those sound good, as does Jones’ fight with Gustafsson Saturday…
