There’s not a lot of people picking Chael Sonnen to upset Jon Jones at UFC 159 Saturday night, and as a result, speculation as to what the future holds for the light-heavyweight champ continues. When you have a champion who’s already breezed through most of the promotion’s top 205 pounders, and has expressed an interest in fighting at heavyweight, it’s no wonder.
Jones participated in media call today to promote his bout Saturday with Sonnen, and the 25 year-old star was asked about his future plans, and of course, whether a move from the light-heavyweight division is on the horizon.
The pound-for-pound contender relayed that his current goal is matching Tito Ortiz’s record for title defenses, which stands at five, and then surpassing the former champ’s run in November. After that, which of course assumes the MMA powerhouse will win both bouts, Jones will begin “entertaining superfights and heavyweight fights.”
Sounds good right? Well, unfortunately Jones wouldn’t comment directly on the possibility of a super fight with middleweight king Anderson Silva, who, of course, is already a vet at destroying men who weigh 205 pounds or more. A move to heavyweight, and bouts with some of the division’s top fighters would certainly be fun to watch, even if it’s hard to imagine Jones relinquishing the light-heavyweight title.
Men like Lyoto Machida, Glover Teixeira, and yes, Chael Sonnen, of course, might also have something to say about the champ’s future plans.
