Aaron Simpson has made the commitment to drop down to welterweight to face former top contender of the division, Jon Fitch according to sources close to MMAWeekly.com.

The rumor puts the ‘grappler’ match-up at UFC 149 in Calgary, Canada, but is far from official.

Jon Fitch will be looking to bounce back from an early KO finish at the hands of former NCAA wrestling champ, Johny Hendricks. Prior to the loss Fitch was riding high with a 5-0-1 record in the UFC against top opponents. A lack of finishes in his record however resulted in his refusal of a rematch title shot against Georges St-Pierre.

Simpson, a former NCAA All-American had been riding his own wave as well, as he pulled three straight victories before falling to Ronny Markes at UFC on Fuel 1 in February. It was a bout that looked to leave the smaller fighter Simpson at a disadvantage. Likely one of the main reasons Simpson decided the change in division.

We will continue to keep you updated on the official word of this match-up as it develops.
