When Alexander Gustafsson tweeted last week that a bout with Jon Jones was “on”, and that he couldn’t wait “to get in that cage” with the UFC light-heavyweight champ, it seemed completely plausible that a bout announcement would materialize soon. After all, “The Mauler” has been violently doing his part to become a top contender by winning six straight, and Jones has repeatedly said he wants to fight the Swedish star.

Since then, however, Jones has relayed on Twitter that he has some “decisions” to make, after having the toe he dislocated at UFC 159 examined. The champ also said that a training camp could be coming within a few weeks, depending on what he decides to do, of course. No bout has been announced though.

While speaking to MMA Fighting.com, the 26 year-old Gustafsson did his part to clear up the situation.

“He wants to fight me, and I want to fight him,” Gustafsson said. “[The UFC hasn’t] offered me the fight yet. I’m just really hoping to get some answers soon.

“I’m really hoping for it, and I think I will get the fight. I think I will be offered a title fight very soon. Nothing is set or signed, though.”

Although the UFC has remained interestingly quiet on this front, chances are, that Gustafsson is right and he’ll be offered a bout with Jones. Yes, everyone wants to see Jones-Anderson Silva, and sooner than later, but since the middleweight champ still has to navigate past Chris Weidman, when and if the “superfight” can take place remains up in the air.
