It may not be in Calgary, but it looks like Canadian fans may be getting a little bit of redemption for last year’s UFC 149. That is because UFC 161 is set for Winniepeg, Manitoba, Canada on June 15. A match between Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson is possible for the event but has not officially been announced. Evans was originally rumored to face Mauricio Rua, but now the former PRIDE star is linked to a rematch against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, which could also take place at this event. It is not known if either of these will be a main event, because flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson is shooting for a June 15 return date.
Evans took on Nogueira in his last bout, and Henderson took on Lyoto Machida – bouts which were widely panned by critics and fans. In both of those fights, all four fighters involved seemed very reluctant to engage despite being some of the best fighters in the light-heavyweight division. An impressive win here will rid fans of the memory of their last bouts, and could easily re-insert Henderson or Evans into title contention.
A possible main event for UFC 161 could be a flyweight title bout. Johnson is currently out with a torn labrum, and he announced that he could be back by the June 15 fight date if his recovery goes well.
“I want to have a full training camp going into a championship fight. This is not a joke, we take this very seriously. That’s why we decided to get the surgery. If things go well, I’m going to push for June 15.”
