As many analyst predicted, with the merger of the UFC and WEC lightweight division, some names will need to be trimmed from the roster. First on the chopping block looks to be Alex Karalexis. Karalexis was expected to battle Zack Micklewright at WEC 48, but an injury caused Micklewright to pull out of the card late. Anthony Pettis stepped in to replace Micklewright and submitted Karalexis with a triangle choke in the round two.

Karalexis tried to make a rapid return to the cage against Zhan Tie Quan at WEC 51, but was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Karalexis is known for his appearance on the first season of the ultimate fighter losing to the season winner, Diego Sanchez.
