Well once again I’ve noticed that there’s been some questions around concerning Dan Hardy’s stomach tattoo. As everyone remembered, there was some controversy involved with it, when the tattoo was removed from the UFC 111 poster. I did some research and here’s what I found.
I went to trusty Wikipedia and found out the tattoo says “om mani padme hum” This is a mantra and is associated with the Buddhist four-armed God Avalokiteshvara. This mantra or prayer is especially important to devotees of the Dalai Lama, who is said to be an incarnation of Avalokiteshvara.
Next we’ll break down what the mantra means. It is a six syllable mantra of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteshvara. The meaning of ‘bodhisattva basically can be translated into “wisdom being” or “heroic-minded one for enlightenment.” ‘Om’ means to sound out loudly and is a mystical or sacred syllable in the Buddhist religion, which is associated with genoristy. Next the word ‘Mani’ means the jewel while ‘Padme’ means the lotus, which would explain the lotus tattoo underneath the Sanskrit writing. ‘Hum’ can best be described by the Dalai Lama himself who stated “Purity must be achieved by an indivisible unity of method and wisdom, symbolized by the final syllable hum, which indicates indivisibility[…]”
So basically it is a Tibetan Buddhist prayer for focus that roughly translates to ‘hail the jewel in the lotus.’ The jewel would symbolize enlightenment and the lotus would be the mind.
Hope this could somewhat clear up the Dan Hardy tattoo predicament! If any of you have anything to add, please feel free to leave a comment!
