Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon (21-7-0) vs. Jamie “C-4” Varner (20-6-1-2)

The matchup between Joe Lauzon and Jamie Varner seems to be a bit of a contrast. One is coming off a big loss, and the other is coming off an upset win that made him relevant again. I guess for Varner, taking a fight on short notice yielded great results one time so why not try for it again. For Lauzon he needs this win to stay relevant, and for Varner if he beats Lauzon convincingly, then he will prove to be a contender again.

Joe Lauzon has been a bit inconsistent in his UFC career, but he has always been entertaining. He may only hold a record of 8-4 in the octagon, but all of those fights have been finishes, win or loss. Lauzon has the ability to finish the bout wherever it goes, but has not won a fight in the first round over the last three years. In the end, Lauzon is dangerous, but his go for broke style leaves him open for a loss.

For Varner, he proved all he needs is one opening with his latest finish of red hot prospect Edson Barboza. He was able to win and defend the WEC lightweight title before having to take nearly two years off. After that Varner went 1-3-1, but luckily found that fighting spirit and was able to finish his last three opponents.

The Bottom Line: Varner has only been finished twice in six career losses, and only one of those losses came in the first round. It’s doubtful that Lauzon will be able to submit him, but it’s more likely that Varner can catch Lauzon. Look for Jaime to win by first round TKO.
