A welterweight match-up has been announced with two fighters looking to rebuild themselves after disappointing losses. Yoshihiro Akiyama will take on Thiago Alves at UFC 149 in Calgary. This should be an exciting match-up pitting a Brazilian bomber against the Japanese judo master.
Thiago Alves will look to regain some of the momentum he had before a disappointing end of a third round against Martin Kampmann. In that fight, he looked like the fighter who people thought was a legitimate threat to GSP’s belt. He had crisp boxing, take-down defense, and a decent ground game. That was until he was choked out with an unneeded take-down at the end of the third round. Alves has fallen on some hard times in terms of weight issues, tough losses, and unhelpful trainers. Hopefully, he can battle back and make a statement in this fight.
Akiyama may have one of the worst records for his UFC fights, going 0-4 after a controversial win in his debut over Alan Belcher. No one can say he has fought sub-level fighters. He has taken on Chris Leben, Michael Bisping, Vitor Belfort, and Jake Shields . Given those were all losses, but he fought valiantly in each loss. This will surely be his last fight if he is unable to win, and at the age of 36 he needs to keep winning if he wishes to continue fighting in the world’s to promotion.
These two fighters will put on a real fight. Not once have they stepped in the cage and put on a pitiful performance. With both coming off losses, they will both have something to prove. That can only mean fireworks for the fans. Sometimes, Joe Silva’s job is just too easy.
