Several names have been tossed about for Fabricio Werdum’s first defense of the UFC heavyweight title.

Among them are former UFC champ Andrei Arlovski, who knocked two highly-ranked heavyweights in Travis Browne and Antonio Silva in the last year.

Another was Stipe Miocic, who scored a one-sided victory over Mark Hunt back in May. Before that, Miocic lost a close decision to another former UFC champion in Junior Dos Santos.

But, according to UFC President Dana White, the first shot will go to the man Werdum defeated to earn the UFC title: Cain Velasquez.

The announcement was made on UFC Tonight last night. The fight’s location and date are yet to be determined.

Arlovski will instead face another former UFC champion in Frank Mir at UFC 191 in San Diego on Sept 5. The bout had been rumored in recent weeks, as reported here at Caged Insider.

Miocic is being “targeted” for a bout with Ben Rothwell, at a UFC Fight Night event in Ireland on October 24.

Werdum and Velasquez, of course, were first supposed to fight back in November of 2014, but then-champion Velasquez was forced to pull out due to injury. The two wouldn’t finally meet in the cage until May of this year — and by then, Werdum had been awarded the interim title by virtue of beating another top contender in Mark Hunt.

Werdum eventually defeated Velasquez via submission in Mexico City, winning the heavyweight title outright.
