Dustin Poirier earned another big win at his new home at lightweight last night at UFC Fight Night 68; a win made even sweeter by the fact that it took place in Poirier’s home state of Louisiana.

The first round TKO over Yancy Medeiros (who coincidentally missed weight, making the bout officially a “catch-weight” affair) represented Poirier’s second straight win since a disastrous effort against Connor McGregor last year. This time, Poirier knocked his opponent around the Octagon with punches and kicks, seemingly at will. A brief sequence on the ground, where Poirier attempted a rear naked choke, was also one-sided.

Even better for “The Diamond,” as Poirier is known, the victory was named “Performance of the Night” by UFC officials, scoring the fighter a $50,000 bonus.

The post-fight bonus was the second straight for Poirier, and his third in his last four bouts.

Also earning “Performance of the Night” was Shawn Jordan, who hit a dramatic high kick to Derrick Lewis in a heavyweight affair among the evening’s preliminary bouts. The honor represents Jordan’s second straight “Performance of the Night” bonus and third post-fight bonus overall.

Finally, a featherweight bout on the main card was named “Fight of the Night” — earning both combatants a $50,000 bonus.

That fight, between Brian Ortega and Thiago Tavares, has already been hailed as a “Fight of the Year” candidate by several writers, including Mookie Alexander of Bloody Elbow. Ortega, who was returning from suspension due to a failed drug test, scored a third round TKO victory.
