It was a few short weeks ago Dominick Cruz was enjoying a successful return to MMA action, stopping a dangerous opponent in Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 178 after about a three year absence.

The former bantamweight titlist Cruz even took the time to taunt current champ TJ Dillashaw’s camp, Team Alpha Male, in a post fight interview.

“I’m just looking forward to beating up more Alpha Fails,” Cruz quipped.

Previously, Cruz had a war of words with Team Alpha Male’s Uriah Faber. The two split a pair of MMA bouts in the WEC and UFC promotions in recent years, but a showdown failed to materialize due to Cruz’s injuries.

It seemed so many great fights were on the horizon. But…

Well, we’ll be waiting a little longer to see that bout. Or, Dillashaw. Or, anyone else.

Yesterday, Cruz announced via his official Facebook that he suffered an ACL tear and will be sidelined from the sport indefinitely, with “no timetable” his return:

It is with great sadness to report I have experienced another ACL injury. This time it’s in the right knee, opposite side of my first and second ACL injuries. Leading up to my last fight in September and after, I have practiced a very careful and methodical training and diet regime to keep my body healthy. Unfortunately, this is beyond my understanding and control. I don’t have a timetable for my return but trust and know I will pour my heart and soul into returning to the Octagon. I want to thank the UFC, my fans and my sponsors ahead of time for your support and prayers. I appreciate you more than you could understand. I don’t have any other facts to share right now. I, along with my camp, respectfully request privacy at this difficult time. Thank You.
