There’s being caught between a rock and a hard place, and then there’s the unenviable spot UFC boss Dana White now finds himself in, which is akin to being caught between a rock and a wall forged of impenetrable titanium. Of course the predicament White is in centers around Jon Jones’s failed drug test and the alleged one-night stay the UFC champ spent in rehab to “cure” himself of his blow-snorting habit. Since there’s a relatively big UFC event this weekend (featuring some Irishman), White has been making all the usual media rounds… which has given mainstream reporters a chance to ask White about the Jones situation and forced White to comment on it. Hence, this little bit from the Boston Herald:

“When the whole story comes out, people will understand, it will be put into perspective,” White told the Herald in an interview Wednesday ahead of UFC’s return to TD Garden Sunday night. “When Jon Jones comes out and does his interview, the truth will come out, and everyone will understand. Or they won’t, you know. Jon is a very polarizing guy, people either love him or they hate him. Either way, the truth will come out soon.”

White declined to elaborate.

Really, in answering the question about Jones’ brief rehab stint, White said nothing at all. Which is kind of all he can say, especially given that Jones’ recent role as pay-per-view headliner at UFC 182 garnered the organization their biggest cash haul in recent memory. Can the UFC president actually bash the golden goose that’s helping keep his organization afloat? Sure, White has thrown Jones under the bus before (remember the cancellation of UFC 151 because Jones wouldn’t fight Chael Sonnen on short notice?). But that was at a time when the UFC’s roster of needle movers was robust. Now, they need Jones more than Jones needs them. Certainly, they need Jones more than Jones needs to stay in rehab any longer than it takes to unpack and then re-pack a suitcase.

If you were Dana White, and you were confronted with the Jon Jones issue by a mainstream reporter, what would you say?
