Dana White said that the Eddie Alvarez fiasco with Bellator was bound to get ugly, but it looks like the fight between the two promotions is getting worse since Randy Couture’s signing with SpikeTV. Despite being a fan of Couture’s fighting aptitude and performances, the UFC president let loose on what he thinks of the former two-division champion as a person.
“I don’t respect him at all. Not even a little bit. The only time Randy Couture is a man is when he sets foot in the cage. As soon as his big toe steps out of that cage, he’s the furthest thing from it.”
According to White, he first got wind of Couture’s impending departure when he backed out of his commentating duties for UFC on Fox 6. It took the UFC president hours of calling, with no answer, for him to get a text back, and when he finally did get to talk to Couture on the phone he feels he was lied to when asked about the deal with SpikeTV.
“He says, ‘I did not sign a deal with Spike and Bellator, but I’m talking to two other networks.’ I said, ‘If you tell me that you did not bail on my last fight to go do a deal with them, I don’t give a s– what networks you sign with. I don’t care if its friggin’ HBO and The Food Network, I could care less who it is… ” He said, ‘I did not sign a deal. Stop worrying, relax and have a great Christmas. We’ll talk later.’ To this f– day, standing right here, right now, we still have not talked.”
A lot of people wondered how this deal would affect Randy’s son Ryan’s recent signing with the UFC, but cooler heads have prevailed on that front. White said that Ryan told him, “Every kid who’s ever strapped on a pair of gloves is dreaming of fighting in the UFC, and if they say they’re not, they’re either lying or stupid.” Ryan Couture also said that his dad will always be his dad, but he cannot imagine fighting anywhere else but the Octagon.
