Regardless of whether you’re a Nick Diaz fan or not, things are certainly more interesting when he’s active, both in the Octagon as well as outside of it. Following his unanimous decision loss to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 158, the outspoken welterweight announced he was likely done with fighting (once more), but then earlier this summer Diaz relayed he wanted to scrap again. Not long after there were reports that Diaz had been offered a bout, but it turned out he wasn’t.
So what’s the latest on the renowned fighter? While participating in a FOX Sports, Google Hangout yesterday, Dana White was predictably asked about Mr. Diaz’s status. The UFC boss man provided this update (comments via MMA Fighting.com):
“Nick’s obviously still on the roster,” White said about the 30 year-old, who lost by UD to Carlos Condit last February, after badly outscoring BJ Penn in October, 2011, for the decision win. “He’s still an active fighter here in the UFC, but as far as I know, he’s just not interested in fighting right now.”
“When Nick finally fought Georges St-Pierre, Nick Diaz made some money. So Nick Diaz has some kickback money,” White said. “He can probably take as long as he wants to fight again. I would assume that’s why (he’s not fighting).”
“You’re fighting to make a living, you’re fighting to pay your bills, you’re fighting to get things that you want out of life. And with the money that Nick Diaz made in his last fight, I’m sure he’s got everything he wants right now.”
While it’s nice to hear Diaz has made some cash, there’s no shortage of fans who would tune into see him fight again. It will be interesting to see if he looks to return in 2014.
