As expected would be the case, Renan Barao will be unable to fight Eddie Wineland as scheduled at UFC 161 due to a foot injury. Word surfaced this weekend that the interim bantamweight champ had been injured, and UFC President Dana White has confirmed to MMA Junkie.com that Barao has indeed been pulled from the event. The renowned fighter has reportedly torn ligaments in his foot.
So, it remains to be seen what the UFC will do now since it’s lost its headliner for the June 15th card. Not surprisingly, Urijah Faber has said he would “definitely consider” fighting Wineland on short notice, if the promotion comes calling.
White also told MMA Junkie.com that nothing’s been determined as to who or what fight might headline the Winnipeg bound card.
Other main bouts that are scheduled for UFC 161 include Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. “Shogun” Rua, Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson, Pat Barry vs. Shawn Jordan and Alexis Davis vs. Rosi Sexton.
