On Saturday, while UFC Fight Night: Swanson vs. Stephens was going down, the news broke that newly-retired fighter Chael Sonnen had failed a second drug test – this one for the banned substances of human growth hormone (HGH) and recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO). Essentially, there’s cheating, and then there’s what Sonnen was trying to do, which is become some sort of supersoldier.
And now, for his hormonal antics, Sonnen is unemployed.
Said the UFC in a statement issued just moments ago:
The UFC and FOX Sports organizations announced today the termination of their respective broadcasting services agreements with analyst Chael Sonnen. This decision comes in light of Sonnen failing a second test conducted by the Nevada Athletic Commission for banned substances in June. Sonnen was previously under temporary suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission for failing an initial test conducted in May.
Sonnen had already retired from competition based on the failed drug test from a few weeks ago, but speculation had run rampant that he’d eventually be back. That speculation can be put to bed with the UFC and FOX’s actions. After years in the sport – who knows how ever many of them tainted – Sonnen is done.
And after making a mockery of the drug screening process, he definitely should be.
