It takes a big man to fess up to what he’s done wrong, and thanks to a litany of banned substances that have helped him get big over the years, former UFC star Chael Sonnen has come clean about the random drug tests that essentially ended his career in the cage and as a talking head for FOX Sports (at least for now).
As per his interview on the Talk is Jericho podcast, Sonnen fully admits that he was breaking the rules.
“I’m a grown man,” Sonnen said. “I knew what I was doing I thought I could have my cake and eat it too. I can take this, I can feel great, they make me feel good, and that’s one of the problems I have. They go ‘these are performance enhancers.’ I go, ‘guys, why else am I taking it?’ I’m showing up to the doctors saying doc ‘do you have anything to make me feel worse?'”
In case you’ve forgotten, the middleweight and light-heavyweight contender failed two drug tests – the first for the substances Clomiphene and Anastrozole, the second for Human Growth Hormone and recombinant human erythropoietin. Despite the superpowers all of these substances would have given him, Sonnen still never managed to win a belt.
Now that Sonnen has come clean, one can only hope that the two other high-level fighters who were snagged by random drug tests – Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort – will man up as well.
