Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez came out from the operating room a new man recently.

Velasquez, who was forced to pull out of a planned rematch with UFC champion Fabricio Werdum that would have taken place this Saturday night, successfully underwent surgery to remove bone spurs that were pinching in his back and causing nerve pain.

A former NCAA wrestler, Velasquez (13-2) has dealt with a series of injuries, especially to his back, during his MMA career. Since 2011, he has fought just six times total, including a June submission loss to Werdum for the title.
