Fresh off his second win over former champ Frankie Edgar, UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson has now received the official notice that 209’s Nate Diaz is coming for his belt. The two are scheduled to collide on Dec. 8 for the UFC’s fifth showing on broadcast television with Fox (UFC on Fox 5). City and venue are yet to be official.
Nate Diaz will be making his second return to broadcast television after taking out Jim Miller back in May, earning his third straight in the division. The streak may not be the longest, but the fact that Diaz is a veteran and that the wins came over three notable opponents (Gomi, Cerrone, Miller) in his return to lightweight, makes Nate a viable contender.
Being at the top of what many consider the most stacked division in the UFC is no easy feat. Ben Henderson carries an impressive 17-2 record, standing undefeated in the UFC. With current wins over Edgar (2x), Guida, Miller and Bocek, the champ could be on his way to shrinking the division very quickly as we’ve seen with Jones and Silva in their respected divisions.
As usual the UFC has begun stacking their broadcast card with talented names. Also announced for the co-main is Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua vs. Alexander Gustafsson and BJ Penn vs. Rory MacDonald. A fourth headliner is expected to be added as well. More on that as it comes in.
