Anderson Silva understands exactly what Chris Weidman is going through.

After ruling the middleweight division for years, Silva was dethroned by Weidman. “The Spider” was granted an immediate rematch following the stunning knockout, but a broken leg suffered when Weidman checked a kick ended that fight.

Now, after Luke Rockhold dominated Weidman for the better part of their December fight, UFC officials have set the stage for a rematch. It is likely to take place in April, giving “The All-American” plenty of time to make changes to his game plan.

But has Weidman done enough to warrant an immediate rematch? His former adversary believes so.

“I think it’s fair,” said Silva, in an interview with Passando a Guarda (thanks to for transcribing). “He was the champion, had good wins on his last fights, defeated tough opponents and deserves respect from everyone; especially the other middleweights.

“He deserves this immediate rematch against Rockhold.”

Silva returns to action later this month for the first time in over a year against Michael Bisping in London. He was suspended following a fight with Nick Diaz in early 2015 due to a failed drug test.

Does the veteran believe a different outcome will come about when Rockhold defends against Weidman?

“It’s a tough, tough fight,” he said. “I believe Weidman will train the things he did wrong in the last fight and it’s going to be a tougher fight for Rockhold.

“They are both great fighters.”
