UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo echoed the thoughts of referee Marc Goddard when asked about the late punches thrown Saturday night in his win over Chad Mendes at UFC 179.

Following the bell sounding an end to the first round, Aldo landed a combo that floored Mendes. No point deduction was made by Goddard, who posted on Twitter after the fight his reasoning behind that decision.

During the post-fight show on FOX Sports 2, Aldo said much the same. The Brazilian successfully earned a title defense by netting a decision over Mendes.

“I was waiting for the ref to stop the round,” Aldo said. “I could not heart it.”

The fight with Mendes featured numerous penalties in all, as the challenger was cited for a pair of eye pokes and a low blow that started the second round.
