TUF 15 finalist Al Iaquinta may have had to wait over a year to score his first Octagon victory, but the powerful lightweight did just that at UFC 164, by earning a decision win over Ryan Couture.

The bout marked the first time Iaquinta had fought since the TUF 15 Finale last June, when he was choked out by Michael Chiesa. After recovering from two knee injuries, however, the New York fighter made his dream come true on August 31st. In a recent interview with Fightline.com’s Dana Becker, here is some of what Iaquinta had to say about recording his first UFC win.

“The morning of the fight, I was thinking about how I had prepared my whole life for this,” Iaquinta said. “I was in shape and feeling strong. I told myself the only think left to do was have fun and enjoy the fight.”

“Getting my hand raised was the best feeling in the world,” the Serra-Longo fighter said. “I had set a goal to win my first fight in the UFC and I had reached it.”

“Now, I have to re-evaluate my goals going forward and I have a whole new set to work towards.”

Based on how Iaquinta looked versus Couture, and the power he’s showcased in the Octagon, chances are he’ll be tapped to fight another rising lightweight or established vet next.
