Strikeforce promotions will be looking to make its triumphant return to its original home base of San Jose, CA on May 19th at the HP Pavilion arena with a stacked line-up. The card will feature Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez (20-2) vs. Josh Thomson (19-4) to end their long running trilogy. Headlining the night of action will be the heavyweight tourney finale between Josh Barnett and. Daniel Cormier. Also recently added is a rematch between Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante vs. Mike Kyle.
Melendez, originally rumored to be facing a UFC veteran in a cross-over by the likes of former champ BJ Penn or top lightweight Anthony Pettis, has proven to not materialize. The SF champ however does have unfinished business with top Strikeforce contender and former champ Josh Thomson as both men hold victories over each other.
Thomson had originally defeated Melendez in July of 2008, claiming the Strikeforce title. The belt would return to Melendez however 17 months later in a rematch. It was a victory over top striker K.J. Noons that earned the AKA standout Thomson the chance to once again clinch Strikeforce gold.
Tickets for the event are ranging from $45 – $175 and will be available to purchase Friday (Apr. 6th) at 10 a.m. PT. UFC Fight Club members will have a chance to purchase a day early on Thursday at 3 p.m. PT.
