It has been confirmed that Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza will fight Tim Kennedy for the Strikeforce middleweight crown at the upcoming Strikeforce: “Houston” event scheduled for the Toyota Center on Aug. 21 in Houston, Texas. This announcement silences rumors of a middleweight tournament for the belt.

Kennedy (12-2) recently fought Trevor Prangley at last month’s “Los Angeles” and won with a first round submission (rear naked choke).  The Green Beret has been undefeated in his last four fights, including wins over Nick Thompson and Elias Rivera.

He faces his toughest test to date in Jacare.

Souza (12-2) made a name for himself in the Brazilain Jiu Jitsu world by defeating the likes of Demian Maia and Robert Drysdale, and by winning the 2005 Abu Dhabi Combat Club gold medal in his weight division. His foray into mixed martial arts saw victories over Jason Miller and Matt Lindland. His most recent fight was against Joey Villaseñor, which he won via unanimous decision.

Strikeforce: “Houston” will feature a main event between Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal and contender Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante. Also, former EliteXC Lightweight champion KJ Noons is expected to face Jorge Gurgel.
