Check out this min-documentary that goes far back before Royce and Rorian Gracie helped plant the sport of mixed martial arts with the UFC. The video tells the story of how the Gracie family matriarch, Helio Gracie challenged the worlds greatest Judoka master in the world, Masahiko Kimura. Initially denied the fight, Gracie put to sleep Kimura’s top apprentice, convincing Kimura that he had deserved a shot.

Even though the much smaller Helio knew he did not have much of a chance, he took on the challenge in front of his home country of Brazil and fought off multiple submissions before getting caught in the shoulder lock which became dubbed the “kimura” that we hear it called today in mixed martial arts.
