Newbie MMA fighter Michael Kirkham reportedly died yesterday morning, following a blow to the head he received during his debut fight at “Confrontation at the Convocation Center” in Aike, South Carolina.

Kirkham lost the fight by referee stoppage via ground and pound, but instead of waking up at after a few minutes, the young man never regained consciousness. Doctors at the event brought Kirkham to the Aiken Regional Medical Center. It was there he was pronounced dead due to a brain hemorrhage.

Kirkham’s opponent that night, Carlos Iravuro, spoke of what happenend;

“I’m in there to compete for a sport,” he says. “I’m not there to do any permanent damage to anybody. I was concerned. Very concerned. I don’t believe I did anything wrong.You know, it was a sport. We both knew what we were doing; we knew what we were getting involved in. I just did what I was supposed to do.
I can’t fully explain how sorry I am. To his family and friends, I am truly sorry and shocked that this tragedy occurred. I, too, will never forget him.”

The promoter of the event Sam King, was at loss for words, only stating;

“Obviously our thoughts and prayers are with his family, other than that I have no comment.”

Michael was just 30 years old when he died. His ringname was “The Tree” for his towering 6’9″ stature. Oddly enough, the fighter competed in the lightweight division which makes his death more of a mystery. According to his Facebook page, Kirkham had a 3 wins 3 losses amateur record.
