New details have emerged in the Boston Marathon bombing incident. It was first discovered that authorities had named two suspects in connection with the bombings – brothers Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, both of Chechen origins – that took three lives and injured hundreds of onlookers and runners alike. Not long after, the suspects killed an MIT police officer before leading law enforcement on a high speed chase, heaving explosives and firing weapons from their car. Tamerlan and one officer would die as a result of the gun battle, while the younger Dzhokhar escaped and remains at large.
We have now learned that at least one of the suspects was connected to one of the more prominent local MMA gyms in the area. Tamerlan, who was also an accomplished Golden Gloves boxer, allegedly trained at the renowned Wai Kru gym in Boston. As very few details have been released, it’s relatively unclear as to his association with the gym. It’s only known that he spent about a year there and most of it was spent sharpening his boxing skills. The gym, home of UFC veteran John “Doomsday” Howard, who compiled a 4-3 record while competing for the UFC, and Sean Gannon, a police officer infamously known for his bare-knuckle fight with underground internet sensation Kimbo Slice, has yet to release a statement.
