One Championship has announced that their welterweight champion Ben Askren (pictured above) will get a chance to erase the only blemish in his MMA career.
Or, to be more accurate, he’ll get a chance to erase the closest thing his MMA career has to a blemish.
The promotion announced last night that Askren will face Luis “Sapo” Santos for the second time this year, at One Championship: Pride of Lions in Singapore on the 13th of November.
Back on April 24, Brazil’s “Sapo” surprised many with a strong early showing against Askren at ONE Championship: Valor of Champions in Pasay (Metro Manila), Philippines. Unfortunately, the fight was stopped — and eventually ruled a no-contest — due to an eye poke at only 2:19 of the first round.
One of the sport’s decorated wrestlers, the Wisconsin native Askren defended the Bellator title four times before leaving for ONE Championships. While he plies his trade in Asia now, rather than either of the two dominant North American organizations, Askren is still widely seen as one of MMA’s best welterweights. Fight! Magazine recently listed him as the #5 170 lb fighter in the world.
The 31 year old Askren remains undefeated in MMA competition at 14-0 with one no contest, and represents RoufusSport in his native Wisconsin along with Evolve MMA in Singapore.
35 year old Luis “Sapo” Santos is 61-19-1 (with one no contest) in his fifteen year MMA career, which includes stints in Bellator and Amazon Fight. He is a member of American Top Team, and fights out of Florida.
