Herica Tiburico scored one of the year’s biggest and highest-profile upsets at Invicta FC 10 in Houston last night, dethroning the promotion’s atomweight champion and “poster girl” Michelle Waterson.

The massive underdog Tiburcio, who was making her debut in Invicta and participating in her first fight outside her native Brazil, snared Waterson in a guillotine choke at 1:04 in the third.

It was a back-and-forth fight prior to that, but the 21 year old Tiburcio’s attacking style was impressive. Waterson, who entered the fight as much as a ten-to-one favorite in some online betting sites, exhibited impressive flexibility to escape Tiburcio’s arm-locks, and landed some of her vaunted Karate/Muay Thai striking — but eventually fell prey to the submission.

Tiburcio improves her MMA record to 9-2 with the win. She joins featherweight titlist Cris “Cyborg” Justino among Invicta’s current Brazilian champions.

Waterson, 28, of New Mexico, drops to 12-4 with the loss — her first in five years.
