After seemingly endless attempts to put him in the cage for some sort of championship bout, it finally happened last night at UFC 223. Now, Dagestani wrestling powerhouse Khabib Nurmagomedov is the king of all lightweights.
Of course, since the fight game is an endless timeline where new stories are constantly emerging to replace the old, we a different beast entirely on our hands: Who should the champ fight next?
The obvious choice would be former interim champ Tony Ferguson, who was supposed to be Nurmagomedov’s dance partner many times over but for various reasons never was. Since there’s a gypsy curse preventing that pairing, the UFC would be foolish to try to book it again.
That leaves us with two other intriguing names.
In his postfight victory speech, Nurmagomedov suggest Georges St-Pierre. However, if the notion of GSP – a former welterweight AND middleweight champ – cutting down to 155 pounds makes you laugh… yeah, that’s because it’s funny. Ain’t no way St-Pierre is making that weight.
Then there’s Conor McGregor, who’d most certainly be the biggest money-making match-up for Nurmagomedov and the UFC. After all, McGregor did fly all the way from Ireland to New York to throw hand-trucks at the windows of a van Nurmagomedov was sitting in.
Unfortunately, McGregor flew all the way from Ireland to New York to throw hand-trucks at the windows of a van Nurmagomedov was sitting in, and now the Irish idiot is going to be tangle up in legal tendrils for a good while.
What do you think? Who should Nurmagomedov face next?
