Brazilian badass Marlon Moraes ruled the World Series of Fighting like an angry predatory fish in a very small pond, and when he came to the UFC, he promptly lost as decision to Rafael Assuncao.
Which, you know? Isn’t such a big deal, because Assuncao is one of the best, and anyway, Moraes won his following two bouts.
Of course, that begs the question: Where does Moraes fit in? Well, he’s fitting in to the main event of UFC Fight Night 131 this weekend, taking on Jimmie Rivera. Rivera has been steadily climbing into title contention, and a quality win might earn him a shot. Since Moraes already has a black mark on his Octagon record, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where he gets a title shot anytime soon, but given what he did to Aljamain Sterling…
…I guess Moraes could be considered the bantamweight division’s spoiler? He certainly spoiled Sterling’s rise, and if he gets the “W” over Rivera, would spoil Rivera’s momentum.
That isn’t to say that Moraes will beat Rivera. Sure, the Brazilian was dominant in WSOF, but he fought nobodies. Now he’s fighting dudes made of iron and stone.
Anyway, here’s to the spoiler.
