Alptekin Ozkilic’s first trip to the Octagon was as a replacement on short notice, but that didn’t stop him from a very impressive debut against a proven UFC veteran.

The wrestler, originally from Turkey but fighting out of Missouri, defeated Darren Uyenoyama by split decision in a spirited affair to begin UFC on Fox 9 in Sacramento, California tonight.

Ozkilic rebounded from a tight first round to dominate the second and third stanzas with solid right hands standing and dominant grappling.

Uyenoyama (8-5 as a professional), a jiu-jitsu specialist from San Francisco, gave his Nor Cal crowd plenty to cheer along the way, with an active guard and some moments of success in standup — particularly a head kick in round one and leg kicks sprinkled throughout. But the night belonged to Ozkilic.

Uyenoyama could be heard telling Ozkilic, who rises to 9-1,”I know guys are ducking you,” as they embraced after the bout.

At UFC on Fox 9, Alptekin Ozkilic defeates Darren Uyenoyama by Split Decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28).
