It’s time for the main event of UFC on FOX 29, and like most main events should, this one promises all sorts of violence.

With the lightweight division finally unstuck from the Irish cement it’s been mired in for so long, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje are here to make a play for contender status. Both are skilled strikers, both are the epitome of “stand and bang”. But only one of them can move up the 155-pound division’s ladder. Who takes it?

Poirier comes out with guns blazing, lighting up Gaethje with all sorts of boxing combos. But Gaethje eats it all with a grin, barely even covering up, and his inside leg-kicks immediately begin to take chunks out of Poirier’s thighs. Poirier doesn’t check them, he just keeps putting fists to his foe’s head, and though he’s got to be ahead on the scorecards by a thousand points, you just know those unchecked leg-kicks are ticking time bombs.

The onslaught resumes for both men in the second, with Poirier punching away and Gaethje kicking away. The difference this time around is Gaethje begins to cover up and let his arms absorb the punches, and Poirier mixes in a couple weak takedown attempts. Poirier is still racking up the points; his leg is going to fall off, though.

Fatigue settles upon both men in the third, and with that fatigue comes a slightly decreased output, and mistakes. Those mistakes take the form of accidental eye-pokes, and soon referee Herb Dean is deducting a point from Gaethje while Poirier’s eye is bloody.

The drama reaches a fever pitch in the fourth, with Poirier struggling to stay mobile on his damaged leg. But suddenly that issue is rendered moot when he finally counters a leg-kick with a left hand that sends Gaethje stumbling. Poirier follows it up with flurry after flurry, and Gaethje wobbles over to the fence, covers up, and eventually falls.

This fight was insane, and both Poirier and Gaethje are total badasses for their respective performances.
