The resurgence of Tonya Evinger continued tonight at Invicta FC 14 in Kansas City with a win over a young, undefeated prospect.
Or, as Evinger herself preferred to put it, “Gator don’t take no s–t.”
The brash bantamweight titlist Evinger dominated her opponent, Pannie Kianzad, from the opening bell, with hard strikes and viscious ground-and-pound carrying the day. Evinger also threatened with an armbar in the first round, and eventually scored a TKO finish with strikes at 3:34 of the second stanza.
A 34 year old Missouri native who fights out of Texas, Evinger’s MMA record now stands at 16-6 overall and 4-0 in Invicta. The 23 year old Kianzad, who fights out of Denmark, dropped to 8-1 in her young career.
The bout was originally scheduled as a title bout, but Kianzad failed to make weight, rendering it a non-title affair. In fact, Evinger also failed to make weight on her first try as well. However, she made the 135 lb limit after officials threatened to strip her of the title.
Among the undercard bouts, flyweight Andrea Lee stood out with an impressive striking and ground attack. The Louisiana native landed consistently to head and body in her bout against Rachael Ostovich, and also dominated the grappling exchanges. Lee eventually earned the win with an armbar submission.
