An extremely rare Friday night UFC is coming to us tomorrow, with killer bantamweight Jimmie Rivera taking on the dangerous Marlon Moraes in the main event of UFC Fight Night 131. Since the event is taking place in Utica, NY, it’s like that the UFC didn’t want to be caught in Utica during the weekend (in other words, Utica is akin to a post-apocalyptic wasteland – and I say this as a New Yorker who would be hard-pressed to ever want to visit Utica).
Anyway, Rivera versus Moraes. Ardent counter-boxer against aggressive Muay Thai guy. Both men are adapt at using strikes to render their opponent’s dumb and senseless, or at the very least to make their lives miserable. Both are also pretty decent on the ground.
And since Rivera has taken out Urijah Faber and Thomas Almeida, you have to think he’s on the cusp of getting that title shot.
The rest of the card has a ton of fights that appeal to New Yorkers, but that main event right there has some serious title implications, so pay attention to it.
Here’s Daniel Cormier and Jimmy Smith doing their hype-y thing.
