Add Booto Guylain’s name to the list of fighters who’ve died as a result of injuries sustained in an MMA fight. Guylain, who hailed from Cape Town, fought at an Extreme Fighting Championship Africa event on February 27; as per a statement on the promotion’s website, he tragically passed away today.

Guylain suffered a serious head injury during his Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) bout at EFC AFRICA 27 last Thursday. Immediately after the bout he was stabilised by the on-site medical team and transported to hospital where he was treated for swelling and bleeding on the brain.

Guylain received care from one of South Africa’s top neuro-surgical teams but tragically passed away today.

“We are devastated,” said EFC AFRICA president Cairo Howarth. “This is a huge loss to the sport and to all who know him. Our thoughts are with his family in this trying time.”

Sadly, because of the dangers inherent in a sport where the objective is to inflict damage, fatalities are inevitable, even with the wealth of protections and safeguards modern MMA has in place. Gulyain is the ninth fighter to die as a direct result of an MMA bout; others include:

  • Doug Dedge, who died from head trauma sustained in an unsanctioned bout in the Ukraine in 1998;
  • Sam Vasquez, who suffered head trauma in a sanctioned bout in Texas in 2007;
  • Michael Kirkham, who also suffered head trauma in a sanctioned bout, this one in South Carolina in 2010.

CagedInsider sends its condolences to Guylain’s family and the South African MMA scene as a whole for this loss.
