The Professional Fighters League, or, as we in the industry like to call it, Zombie World Series of Fighting, has another installment tonight. And while the setting may have been a bit inauspicious – in a university gymnasium in Washington, DC (GWU, my alma mater) – there violence level was akin to an old Mortal Kombat game.
Hey, remember Jake Shields? He was a jiu-jitsu badass in Strikeforce, struggled for traction but did moderately well in the UFC, and then got old in the WSOF. Well, he faced a young Hawaiian face-punching specialist in Ray Cooper III for PFL 3’s main event, and Cooper slaughtered him. It was a bad case of sprawl-and-brawl, and Shields came down with it hard, eventually becoming a bloody, fetal mess on the canvas. Yikes!
John Howard dusted off the cobwebs and beat the snot out of Gasan Umalatov. Howard punched the fellow UFC vet in the grill, then took him down, took his back, and eventually worked up a choke that forced Umalatov to tap.
UFC vet Rick Story beat up Yuri Villefort pretty thoroughly…
…While Shamil Gamzatov beat up TUF winner Eddie Gordon on the feet.
As free, non-UFC or Bellator shows go, this PFL 3 was pretty alright.
