Thiago Tavares was one heck of a lightweight competitor in the UFC for a long while, but that time has passed, and now it’s all about the PFL and that promised million-dollar payday for the tournament winner.
Robert Watley had a good run in Legacy Fighting Alliance, so a scrap against a veteran like Tavares will be a good test.
The bout opens with both men slinging heat, and when the Brazilian misses on a takedown attempt, he uses the opportunity to hunt for a leglock. Watley keeps his wits about him, despite Tavares being tenacious as hell, and the bell sounds.
They come out for Round 2 ready to mix it up with fervor, but Watley tries to throw an inside leg-kick and catches Tavares in the cup dead on. Tavares is hurt bad, and eventually says he can’t continue.
And the Illinois commission inexplicably rules the bout as a TKO win for Watley instead of a “no contest”. What. The. Hell?
PFL official tells me the Watley result was a commission call since Tavares couldn’t continues after what was deemed an accidental low blow in which the fighter could not continue after the recuperation period.
