Michelle Waterson was scooped up from Invicta FC with the idea that she’d be one of the strawweight division’s stars. Well, she is somewhat, I guess, although the shine has been diminished a bit by some losses in the Octagon.

Tonight she faces Cortney Casey, who’s big and tall for the division and good for a tough fight.

That tough fight emerges within the first two minutes, as Casey counters Waterson’s speed and constant lateral movement with heavy kicks and punches that sap the life right out of her. Only later in the round does Waterson nail a takedown and pursue success with her ground and pound. Casey threatens with an armbar, but she’s eating leather.

“The Karate Hottie” wisely gets things to the ground again in the second, although Casey is really putting her through the submission attempt ringer from the bottom. Waterson escapes everything, but Casey is making this one close as hell.

Round 3 sees Casey stuff a takedown and manhandle (woman-handle?) her opponent with some suffocating work in top position, and time runs out with her trying to extend an armbar.

Yeah, Casey was a tough opponent.
