Oh to be Kelvin Gastelum.

One minute, he’s winning TUF 17, defeating the (then) fearsome Uriah Hall and kicking off a very promising UFC career. But the dude kept missing weight like it was his job (actually, his job was to make weight – oops), screwing with any hopes of being the man at welterweight. His excursions at middleweight met with mixed success; sure, he’s fresh off a knockout win over Michael Bisping, but he failed a drug test for his Vitor Belfort fight, turning a win into a “no contest”, and Chris Weidman beat Gastelum up pretty soundly.

All of this is a roundabout way of saying Gastelum will never be champ. Not at welterweight, and certainly not a middleweight. He’s tough, he’s got talent and ability, but there are too many guys who are far better at fighting (and making weight) than he is… like UFC 224 opponent Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.

Yup, Gastelum and Jacare are fighting in the co-main event this weekend. An impressive win will likely give the Brazilian another crack at champ Robert Whittaker; an impressive win by Gastelum will probably see him tossed in against someone even tougher, and he’ll lose that one.

Anyway, here’s a Countdown vid in honor of this match-up.
