Tonya Evinger – the salty veteran on Invicta’s roster and their bantamweight champ – got royally screwed when she last stepped into the cage against Yana Kunitskaya. But the screwjob was so evident (it took the form of referee interference allowing Kunitskaya to latch on an armbar that otherwise never would’ve happened), the athletic commission ultimately rendered that fight result null and void. And so it was that Evinger and Kunitskaya rematched in the main event of Invicta FC 22.

Would Kunitskaya replicate her feat without referee intervention? Or would Evinger smash her, just as she was on her way to doing the last time around?

Round 1 saw Kunitskaya jump to guard with a guillotine attempt, and then proceed to throw everything at Evinger but the kitchen sink. Armbars, heelhooks, armbars, heelhooks – it was as if the challenger recognized that that her sole hope for victory was on the ground. Evinger, of course, dodged it all, and throughout rained down fire.

Kunitskaya manages to throw her foe to the canvas in the second, and once more she hunts for those submissions. But she’s on the bottom, carrying Evinger’s weight and getting tired, and soon she’s moving at half speed. That’s all the opening Evinger needed, as she deftly took her back and slipped on the rear naked choke, going for the submission before she even had the position. The ploy worked, and soon Kunitskaya was tapping.
